As part of efforts to further promote grassroots sports and intellectual development among youths, the 2025 Oba Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye Sports Competition has kicked off in Owo with a broader scope this year, as the Owo Sports Committee officially includes Scrabble and Table Tennis alongside football.
The newly introduced games will be competed for among secondary schools across Owo Land, adding a refreshing twist to the annual sporting event which traditionally focused solely on football.
To ensure a smooth take-off of these additions, the committee in charge of the yearly event, on Monday, distributed sporting items including Scrabble boards, Table Tennis bats, and other essentials to participating schools. This is to aid proper practice and preparation ahead of the various matches and competitions.
The competition continues to enjoy the solid support of its main sponsor, Hon. Ajibola Adetula, a proud son of Owo from the illustrious Oludasa Dynasty, who resides in Canada. His unwavering commitment to youth and community development through sports has kept the competition alive and thriving.
Winners of the various categories — Football, Scrabble, and Table Tennis — will be honored with awards and trophies during the upcoming and culturally revered Igogo Festival, a major celebration in Owo Kingdom. The grand finale of the sports event will be presided over by the chief host, His Imperial Majesty, Alayeluwa Oba (Dr.) Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye III, the Olowo of Owo, Chairman of the Ondo State Council of Obas, and Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Babura, Jigawa State.
Dignitaries and guests from across Nigeria and abroad are expected to grace the grand occasion, underscoring its importance on both cultural and developmental fronts.
Details of the final match dates and award presentations will be communicated in due course.
Residents and lovers of sports and culture are encouraged to stay tuned and participate in what promises to be a memorable and impactful event in
the Owo calendar.
