There was palpable tension on Tuesday morning at Adeyeri Iyere Comprehensive High School, Owo, as external candidates sitting for the ongoing NECO examination faced an unexpected and frightening disruption.
During the distribution of question papers, a female candidate calmly raised the alarm, informing the examination supervisor that there was a snake inside her locker. Her claim was initially dismissed as a joke.
But the mood in the hall quickly shifted when a male candidate opened the locker to investigate. To everyone's shock, a small black snake was indeed inside. As the locker opened, the snake leapt out, sparking panic among the students.
Several candidates, particularly female students, screamed and ran out of the hall in terror. Others stood frozen in confusion, while a few brave students and teachers rushed to contain the situation. In a swift response, the snake was killed before it could escape or harm anyone.
The incident, though resolved without injuries, raised serious safety concerns among students and staff. Many questioned how a snake could have entered a closed locker with no visible openings. Some speculated it might have entered the hall earlier through gaps in the building’s structure.
According to observers, the examination hall is in a deplorable condition, with a damaged roof, broken window shutters, and missing doors—leaving it exposed to intrusions by reptiles and other dangerous creatures.
“This should be a wake-up call,” said one teacher. “It’s a miracle that no one was hurt. But we may not be so lucky next time.”
Students and staff are now appealing to the relevant authorities to urgently renovate the hall and ensure it is safe and secure for use—not just during national exams, but for everyday academic activities.
